Each year, we list our top gifts for writers in our annual holiday gift guide. Be sure to check out our holiday gift guides from 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2013, as well as this list of creative and clever presents for your favorite writer.

One of the best parts of the holidays is finding just the right gifts to give your loved ones.

If one of those loved ones is a writer, skip the cliched pen-and-notebook set and go for one of these 17 great gift ideas they’re sure to love. There’s something for every budget, from noise-canceling headphones worth hundreds of dollars to fun literary socks that make the perfect stocking stuffers.

Happy gifting!

1. Journal of the Month

The Journal of the Month service sends different print literary journals to subscribers on a regular basis. It’s an ideal gift for new writers eager to learn about the small magazine scene, emerging writers seeking a home for their writing, and experienced writers in need of fresh inspiration and a connection to current publishing trends.

You can choose how frequently you receive journals, and if you already subscribe to some, you can opt out of receiving those.

2. Literary coloring books

Adult coloring books are a great way to unwind and exercise a different part of your brain than you use when writing.

While you can find adult coloring books in an array of topics, we recommend those with a literary spin, such as:

  • She Said It Best: Jane Austen: Wit & Wisdom to Color & Display
  • Romeo and Juliet: A Coloring Classic
  • Color the Classics: Anne of Green Gables: A Coloring Book Visit to Prince Edward Island

3. A scratch-off poster

Perfect for the voracious reader, the 100 Books Scratch-Off Poster lets you track your progress as you work through a variety of books ranging from classics to contemporary hits.

Give your writer a fun challenge for the year to come, as well as a cool piece of art to hang in their home.

4. A coffee subscription

Writers love coffee, but it can be easy to fall into a rut. A coffee subscription is a fun way to mix up the routine and try blends you’d never try on your own.

Atlas Coffee Club delivers coffee from around the world to your doorstep every month, and each coffee comes with tasting notes, brewing tips, and a postcard that tells you about its origins. Subscriptions come in three-month, six-month, and 12-month packages, and you can specify which roast and grind type you prefer.

5. Coasters

Give them a place to put their coffee mug (or tumbler of whiskey) with any of these cool coaster sets:

    • Typewriter coast set
    • Jane Austen books coaster set
    • Library card coaster set
    • Pun book coaster set

6. Novel Teas

If your writer prefers to get their caffeination from tea, Novel Teas could be the perfect present. Each bag comes with 25 individually wrapped tea bags containing English breakfast tea and a quote about books from a variety of authors. There is also a Modern American Classics version.

7. Humorous gifts

Writing can be tough, stressful work. Inject a little levity into your favorite writer’s day to help them see the fun in what they do. We especially like these items:

  • “Being a Writer Is Easy” mug
  • Literary Insults Chart
  • “I Put the Lit in Literature” t-shirt

8. Literary socks

Gone are the days when socks were a lame gift your ancient aunt gave you. You could easily fill a whole dresser with the cool socks available these days. The writer in your life is sure to like:

  • Jane Austen socks
  • Banned Book socks
  • Shakespeare socks

9. Noise-canceling headphones

Working in coffee houses isn’t always conducive to the best writing. (And sometimes, working at home is no better.) Help your writer tune out distractions from clattering silverware to neighborhood lawn mowers with a nice pair of noise-canceling headphones.

You can get a decent set for anywhere from $30 to $350, depending on how fancy you want to get.

10. Office supply storage

Help them keep their pens, Post-Its, and other supplies in order with a fun storage solution like this library book desk organizer or this Hemingway pencil cup.

11. ProWritingAid Premium

ProWritingAid Premium is a personal editor and a writing coach in one. It checks your pieces for everything from grammar to sentence structure, pointing out spots that need improvement and offering suggestions for how to take your writing to the next level.

The Premium version has no word count limits and gives you access to the ProWritingAid desktop app and Web browser extensions.

12. A Love Book

If you love a writer, tell them how much you care in a language that will make them fall head over heels: a personalized Love Book. You can customize everything from the cover to the number of pages and choose from a wide selection of illustrations and text to make a book that’s unique to your love story.

My husband gave me one of these for our anniversary this year, and I have to say, it was the best gift I think he’s ever given me.

13. Headspace App

It can be hard to remember to take time to relax when you’re under deadline (and even when you’re not). A meditation app like Headspace can help your writer set aside a few minutes a day for some “me time.”

Headspace lets you set daily reminders and offers a number of guided meditation lessons to help you unwind, focus, refresh, and more.

14. FreshBooks

Most freelance writers went into freelancing because they love writing, not because they enjoy timekeeping, billing, and chasing after clients who won’t pay.

FreshBooks makes this part of their lives a little easier so they can get back to doing what they truly like doing.

15. Home spa supplies

Many writers are in dire need of some self-care, but most days, they’re lucky if they remember to eat. Remind your writer to take a moment for themselves by giving them the tools to create a relaxing spa experience at home.

Think face masks, bath bombs, and even a foot bath.

16. A cleaning service

If you think working from home means having plenty of time to clean, you’ve clearly never worked from home. Give your writer a much-needed break from chores by gifting them with cleaning services. You can buy one visit or several, with services ranging from organization to deep-cleaning.

And it’s surprisingly affordable; a quick search of Care.com, for instance, revealed several five-start housekeepers in my area charging between $10 and $35 an hour.

17. Better equipment

Given how much time writers spend typing, they deserve equipment that’s cool and comfortable. Upgrade your favorite writer’s setup with snazzy mouse-and-keyboard sets like the following. Bonus: all of these items are wireless, so they work with desktops, laptops, and even smart TVs.

(Looking for a gift that’s even bigger? Be sure to check out our guide to the best laptops for writers.)

  • Logitech MK750 Wireless Solar Keyboard and Mouse
  • iClever Wireless Keyboard and Mouse in Rose Gold
  • UHURU Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
