This year’s Xbox Games Showcase pulled back the curtain on Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, marking an unusual return for the subseries, which traditionally doesn’t revisit the same narrative arcs so directly (think Modern Warfare in 2007, followed by World at War in 2008).

Set in 2035, Black Ops 7 is a direct sequel to 2012’s Black Ops II, bringing back familiar faces like David Mason and Raul Menendez. The trailer leans hard into future-tech paranoia, exploring that classic sci-fi question: When does advanced technology stop being science and start looking like magic? In this case, the answer involves a terrorist wielding such next-gen tech that he basically turns into a cyberpunk Scarecrow.

No official release date yet, however, a full reveal will drop this summer.
