Nicky Case doesn’t just make powerfully personal indie games on LGBTQ experiences, media bias, and anxiety. They also accidentally invented an innovative web format that blends interactivity, activism, and education.

Explorable Explanations, as Case dubbed them, are “active essays.” They’re participatory learning experiences, using playful puzzle-like simulations to make complex theories on social and political forces more accessible.
