The Python Software Foundation in collaboration with JetBrains released the second annual Python Developers Survey for the year of 2018.

The report explores in depth the state of the Python ecosystem, from the community’s most used tools to adoption rates of specific Python versions.

In this article, however, we will only focus on the most interesting highlights. Head over to the official report to have a look at the full results.

The highlights

To start thing off, it is important to mention that the percentage of participants that use Python as their primary language has increased significantly since last year (79%), going all the way up to 84%.

One of the most interesting insights brought to light by this report is what other programming languages Python developers use and JavaScript seems to be the community’s best friend with 50% of the respondents reporting using it with Python.

Compared to 2017, Go shows some significant growth and increased adoption from the Python community, making to the top 10 in 2018.

Going back to the main topic of the survey, Python, when asked what do they use the language for, the participants’ responses place data analysis on the top of the list closely followed by web development.

The tools

But what good is a language without a thriving ecosystem? The 2018 Python Developers Survey explores in depth what tools are mostly used by the Python community.

Having a look at the most used web frameworks, we come across to a huge surprise! Flask usage grew by 15% during the last year, climbing all the way to the top of the list, closely followed by Django.

Last but not least, let’s have a look one of the most important parts of the Python ecosystem – data tools! Unsurprisingly, when it comes to data science frameworks and libraries, NumPy is number one in the rankings while TensorFlow made it to the top 10.

On the big data front, Apache Spark was voted as the most used tool and PostgreSQL the number one database going toe to toe with MySQL and SQLite.
