The 2019 RightScale State of the Cloud Survey offers rich data in cloud use and growth. One of the most important findings of the survey is that as cloud use continues to grow, organizations turn their focus on cloud governance and cost optimization.

Without further ado, let’s have a closer look at the most interesting highlights.

Cloud growth

To start things off, it is important to mention that the significant majority of the respondents falls into the intermediate and advanced spectrum on the cloud maturity scale. More specifically, 31% of the respondents are on an intermediate level and 32% on an advanced level (check out the official report for clarifications on the cloud maturity scale).

Moving on to the cloud strategy followed by the organizations that participated in the survey, multi-cloud seems to be the number one solution for the vast majority of the respondents (84%).

It is also worth mentioning that both public and private cloud show significant growth rates, however, public cloud, in particular, exhibits remarkable growth.

As far as the annual public cloud spend results are concerned, the results show that most participants spend up to $120,000.

Who manages the cloud

As more and more companies adopt or plan to adopt cloud strategies, they are investing in a central cloud team that provides centralized cloud control, is responsible for finding best practices to help accelerate the use of cloud while reducing costs and risk, and more. 51% of the respondents report already having a central cloud team while 23% are planning to have.

Concerning the role of these central cloud teams, managing and optimizing costs of cloud services appear to be the number one priority.

The challenges

As the introduction of this article indicates, as cloud adoption numbers rise, challenges are inevitable to rise as well. The RightScale report indicates that cloud spend and cloud governance, as well as finding people with expertise, rise as the most significant challenges.

Another set of challenges related to cloud adoption is the software used in the cloud. Unsurprisingly, most of the software challenges are related to licensing, as seen in the figure above.

As managing cloud spend is the number one challenge for organizations, some policies that aim to optimize cloud costs are in order. In the figure below you can see what policies are adopted by the participants as well as what percentage of each solution is automated or not.

The tools

Last but not least, we need to talk about tools! And what else is there to talk about if not containers!

It is no surprise to see that Kubernetes shows the fastest growth rate, growing from 27 percent to 48 percent adoption. It is, however, interesting to see that Docker finds itself in the number one spot of the currently most used container tools.
