You’re in between jobs? Considering a career change but you don’t know which technology is the biggest earner? Fear not!

Here are the highlights of the Upwork Skills Index with the most wanted freelance skills you should keep an eye on.

    Blockchain Whitepaper 2018

    Free: Blockchain Technology Whitepaper

If building a blockchain from scratch is beyond your current scope, the blockchain technology whitepaper is worth a look. Experts from the field share their know-how, tips and tricks, development advice, and strategy for becoming a blockchain master.

Starting with the most shocking news, despite being the number one freelance skill for Q1 and Q2 of 2018, blockchain is nowhere to be seen in the top 20 list for Q3 2018! Investment in public cloud services and infrastructure, on the other hand, is increasing steadily with Google Cloud Platform landing in 11th place (a significant drop from Q2, nonetheless), Google App Engine API in number 18, and Kubernetes climbing to number 8. This trend seems to agree with Gartner’s prediction that 28% of spending in key IT segments will shift to the cloud by 2022.

User experience remains a top focus for global companies and that can be confirmed with the growth in importance of Vue.js skills, that climbed all the way to the 7th place, as well as React.js that landed on the 19th place.

Another fact that I found extremely interesting is the incremental drop of TensorFlow that landed on the 20th place for this quarter of 2018, gradually falling from the 13th place in Q2 and second (!) place in Q1. Now, no one can deny that TensorFlow is an important trend.

This framework is taking the machine learning universe by storm and constantly gaining momentum with giants like Twitter, eBay, and Google integrating it into their services. According to the 2018 StackOverflow Developer Survey, TensorFlow is the most loved framework with an impressive 73.5% of respondents praising it. The survey also states that it is one of the fastest-growing technologies, and that couldn’t be more obvious. But is the hype translated into job opportunities? The Upwork Skills Index indicates that this is not the case.

Speaking of technologies that rise and fall behind, what are your predictions regarding the technologies that will last, fade or evolve further in the coming year? Is TensorFlow just a trend or a technology that is becoming the new norm in machine learning? How much further will serverless evolve?

Participate in our survey and let us know what technology will be the king of 2019 and which one will have its run cut short!
