Defunding the police may sound like a scary, drastic proposition. However, as Full Frontal host Samantha Bee explained, it “isn’t a far-fetched idea” and will likely do a lot of good — particularly once you understand what it would actually entail.
“Given the enormous harm being done to black and brown communities, we can’t only keep responding with the same weak incremental tweaks,” said Bee, citing the proven ineffectiveness of police reform. “George Floyd himself was killed in a city that’s been called a ‘shining star’ of police reform.”
Body cameras, diversity initiatives, and anti-bias and deescalation training have been shown to be ineffective in checking police behavior. “It’s like how having to do a weekly Zoom call with TBS hasn’t stopped me from celebrating Topless Tuesdays,” said Bee. Read more…
