The growing value of containerization in enterprise IT strategies

JAXenter: What does the recent consolidation mean for the enterprise container platform market?

Neil Charney: The consolidation is very positive for Docker and for the broader industry – it underscores the critical role containerization plays in enterprise IT strategies. VMware’s acquisition of Heptio further demonstrates the demand for containerization and more sophisticated tooling and services for managing containerized application environments.

Following IBM’s proposed acquisition of Red Hat, it’s clear that other companies are reacting and looking for acquisition strategies to assemble a container platform capable of managing containerized applications across multi-cloud environments. Orchestration is one component but what organizations really want is an easy to use, comprehensive container platform with security, choice and the ability to run all applications, both legacy and cloud native, anywhere. This is why we developed the Docker Enterprise container platform, which Forrester recently stated leads the pack in its first-ever New Wave enterprise container platform evaluation.

JAXenter: How do the recent acquisitions impact Docker?

Neil Charney: These acquisitions reinforce the role of Docker as a neutral technology partner for enterprises looking to implement a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy independent of any cloud or virtualization vendor. We see an immediate opportunity to address an enterprise need that is largely overlooked – providing companies with the freedom to utilize existing systems and adapt as their needs evolve, whether across new architectures, application stacks or infrastructures. It’s this philosophy that has led to over 650 customers relying on the Docker Enterprise container platform – and remains a major point of differentiation with the recent movement in the industry.

These acquisitions reinforce the role of Docker as a neutral technology partner for enterprises looking to implement a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy independent of any cloud or virtualization vendor.

We have a clear container platform strategy and roadmap – which we work closely with customers on – that is focused on enabling companies to drive future innovation, while also continuing to derive value from their existing investments.

JAXenter: Do you expect to see this consolidation continue?

Neil Charney: The acquisitions by established enterprise technology vendors signal the value of containerization in enterprise IT strategies. We view the recent acquisitions as very natural for a rapidly growing industry – as new markets emerge and expand, new vendors will continue to enter the space, while others are acquired. The market is receiving a lot of attention these days and we only expect that to continue as more and more enterprises turn to container platforms for IT initiatives spanning cloud migration, application modernization and microservices.

The vibrant ecosystem has grown rapidly since the launch of the Docker open source project back in 2013 and its technology and enterprise solutions have since become a focal point for all enterprise IT initiatives including cloud migration and modernization.

Thank you!
